The Young Foundation, together with the Institute of Community Studies before it, have long been interested in the effects of housing allocation policies on family life. But with the emergence of credit-based letting systems, this whole area is now changing very rapidly, so that comparison with regimes in the past is becoming much harder.

This paper explores some of the implications of new allocation systems for families and considers what type of research on the effects of housing policy on families may now be possible and valuable.
