As part of our work on the National Civic Impact Accelerator (NCIA), we’re calling for case study submissions sharing stories of engagement happening within a university, or outside of it, around community-based engagement or climate education. We welcome submissions from community and third sector organisations, students, and practitioners in England.
NCIA is an ambitious three-year programme to gather evidence and intelligence, share civic innovations, and provide universities with the framework and tools to deliver meaningful, measurable civic strategies and activities. The programme is funded by Research England, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
The case studies submitted to this call may be published and disseminated as part of this programme, showcasing the work to universities, policymakers, community groups and other institutions. It’s an invitation to be part of growing the evidence base to support the acceleration of innovation and good practice across England.
Topics for submission:
- Meaningful engagement between university students and local communities: examples that provide insight into both community and student perspectives. This type of engagement can be any instance where university students and local community groups or individuals come together for a common purpose, or to work together on a project. It can be facilitated through a university or outside of it. We are particularly interested in ‘alternative’ or less traditional practices of student-community engagement, examples of student- or community-led action, and engagement that has a meaningful impact on people or places. For these case studies, we’re looking for submissions from community groups or students.
- Civic climate education: examples of initiatives that prepare individuals of all ages for a greener future. We are particularly interested in examples of climate education that integrate civic principles such as collaboration between institutions, place based and holistic approaches, and a focus on building skills beyond STEM. We welcome examples of climate education designed or delivered by a range of institutions and organisations. For these case studies, we’re looking for submissions from universities, other institutions, or community groups.
How to submit your case study
Completing our simple form for each submission topic should take no longer than 20 minutes. Once we have received all submissions, we will select a handful of projects to conduct further research with, as in-depth case studies. This could include interviews, surveys, or other data collection activities with your group, and potentially a site visit.
Incentives
In appreciation of your time and effort, we will offer an incentive payment to any submissions that are selected for further research. We endeavour to notify applicants of our selection within one month of submission. We will offer incentives in the form of donations to your organisation (where applicable) or payments to remunerate individual time.
Submission deadline: 9.30am on Monday 31 March 2025
