As the UK gears up to host the Eurovision song contest on behalf of Ukraine, we’re working with Spirit of 2012 in a project exploring how the most famous song contest in the world brings communities together through music. This project celebrates the contribution of refugee and migrant communities nationwide and brings diverse communities together through local events.
We will work with existing music groups and choirs, communities and local services across Tower Hamlets, towards a grand finale music event at our offices at East London’s famous Toynbee Hall.
Our Chief Executive, Helen Goulden OBE, says:
“We’re absolutely delighted to be working with Spirit of 2012, celebrating our national support for refugee communities in the UK through the universal language of music. Across the globe and through the ages, singing has been a vehicle for storytelling, bringing loved ones together and sharing traditions in ways that transcend language barriers. We want to capture the joy of Eurovision, celebrating song, culture and connectedness across countries – and recognising a broader opportunity for cultural exchange.”
Head of Strategic Design and Insight, Siân Whyte, adds:
“Working with our local communities to help bring their visions to life, this project will roll out with a series of events and engagement opportunities, with the ultimate aim of sharing learnings from the process and enhancing a spirit of connectedness through song”.
