A call for resident participation
Working together with the London Sustainable Development Commission, we want to hear from residents across the capital.
We’re looking for people to share how they currently access and experience sustainable adaptations to their homes, and their ideas about how to make homes more energy-efficient and more cost-effective for everyone in London.
Share your experiences and views
People around the UK want to tackle the climate emergency – but in order for London alone to achieve net zero carbon emissions, 2.2m homes across the capital must be adapted to be more energy-efficient. Residents may also need to equip their homes to deal with heatwaves and other climate change impacts.
As London makes this green transition, we want to hear a range of viewpoints and experiences, to ensure fairness is at the heart of policies and programmes. So we’re creating spaces to discuss how people across London understand what needs to change, to hear how they’re adapting, and to ask what they need to achieve a just transition.
A cohort of ten peer researchers is receiving paid training and support from The Young Foundation to:
- design and conduct interviews with their peers
- facilitate workshops with their peers and the people who shape policies and programmes
- analyse the findings of the peer research process
This project is being run by The Young Foundation, commissioned by the London Sustainable Development Commission.
Who can get involved?
Our peer researchers are people aged over 18, working a minimum of 20 days between June 2024 and February 2025, who live in one of the areas of London listed below:
- Haringey
- Barking and Dagenham
- Croydon
- Brent
People living across London are invited to get involved in our workshops, which are taking place in Autumn 2024.
We are particularly interested to hear from people with experiences that are traditionally less heard in research, including:
- young adults (aged 19-34)
- older people (aged 65+)
- women and non-binary people or people who prefer to self-describe
- people from minority ethnic groups
- people with a disability or long-term health condition that impacts their daily life
We will support the needs of all individuals who engage in our peer research process.

Ways to engage
The opportunity to join our team of peer researchers has now closed.
We are currently recruiting local residents to take part in up to three workshops that are taking place on Monday 21 October, Monday 28 October and Monday 4 November, 10am – 1pm at Toynbee Hall in east London:
- Get paid £40 per workshop (each workshop is three hours)
- Free childcare is provided
- No experience or prior knowledge is needed – if you live in London and want to influence positive change in your local area, join us!
Training, support and payments
No experience is needed to join this project as a community researcher or a workshop participant. We will always provide lunch and refreshments.
Peer researchers:
- receive paid training and gain skills, including a certificate of participation, safeguarding and GDPR
- are paid monthly
- work around existing commitments – we will always decide days and times to meet as a group.
- are supported by a great team who will support you through this process.

Workshop participants:
- We will provide free childcare during the workshops, you are welcome to bring your children.
- We can pay for travel expenses to help you get to and from the workshops.
- For every three-hour workshop you take part in, you’ll receive £40 (directly to your bank account, via PayPal, or as an Amazon voucher).

How will The Young Foundation store my data?
All data collected as part of this process is to ensure that a range of viewpoints and lived experiences are heard in research. Your information will be stored securely by The Young Foundation, and only colleagues who require access to this information for purposes of the project will have access to the personal data.
All personal data from this form will be destroyed after a maximum of 6 months after the completion of the project, and we won’t contact you about anything else, unless prior consent is obtained.
Findings from the research will be shared accessibly by The Young Foundation and used by the London Sustainable Development Commission to ensure that policies and programmes that aim to shape a fairer future, are informed by your lived experience.
You can withdraw your personal data at any stage in the process by emailing research@youngfoundation.org -you don’t need to give us a reason.
